So I had this diatribe all written up about the Soundwaves pics for the greatest songs of the last 25 years and now can't even find Dennis' original post on it...Suffice it to say that Dennis and I have very little seperation in the pics of the last 25 years except for the exceptionally awful choice of M&M's "Lose Yourself" at like number two.
To which I just gotta say.."Come On Man!!!!"
Look, Your criteria to make the list:
1) Song was a game changer
2) Instant classic
3) Opened doors/ broke new ground.
Well, Lose Yourself did none of that! There was no paradigm shift. No flood gates opened up for all the repressed white rappers. The song will be easily forgotton...In fact I almost had to look up the title again to write this. Yet, it was the single for a major movie soundtrack. Oh, and as far as breaking new ground goes? ...ummm nope.
Meanwhile, Prince's Purple Rain, which did all of these things (and also was a soundtrack song) ranked several spaces lower on Dennis and Steve's chart...and its is a song everyone still knows the words to almost 25 years later. You think people are gonna know the words to Lose Yourself in 25 years? No, Purple Rain defined a generation. MnM will be little more than a foot note for his.
Anway I know I'm a little late on that conversation but had to get it out of me...Oh and Purple Rain also spawned at least 2 other top ten hits for Prince and another for "The Time" and ...SORRY! There I go again. Nevermind that. What I really came here to say is "How bout that Katy Perry, huh ?!"
Don't get me wrong; on the nutrition table of music I compare her with say a Taco Bell Mexican Pizza. But isn't the Mexican Pizza such a fun food to eat? I mean, sure there's not a lot of there-there but who among us didn't secretly turn it up in the car (when we were all alone of course) and tap toes to her monster "Kissed a Girl" Banger. ALSO- Loved the dance remixes on that one.
And now She's gone and done it again with her new single "Hot n' Cold". I mean, here's how I know its good. It woke me out of a dead sleep while I was dreamin away to the drones of pop wannabees like David Archuletta and soul crushing soul retreds like Adele and her insipid "Chasing Pavements" homage to much better singers. Here's a tip; when VH1 says its a "You gotta Know" artist, run for the hills! You're about to get a blast of some rock/pop drivel like the vacuous OAR, Gavin Degraw or very British (and he knows it) James Blunt who milked that "Your Beautiful" racket for far too long.
So yes, I was having many nightmares. That is before the beautiful pop princess Katy Perry came and saved me. Her 80's inspired "Hot n' Cold" was just the elixer to cure the blues I was feelin listening to artists who take themselves way too seriously. See and that's just it, Perry doesn't take herself too serious. She's cut from the 'Girls Just wanna have fun' mold. Frankly, that's all I wanna do...have fun. And her music sees to it that I do. So what if its silly and a bit contrived? You tellin me James Blunt ain't contrived? Fact is Katy's a hoot. She isn't some warmed over post folk songstress trying to force concern for the planet down my throat as if it would make me forget about the real folk singers who do it better. She's just a girl, havin a great time.
So I'm gonna go back to sleep now and have my own good time. Maybe I'll dream of Katy Perry, Beyonce and Leona Lewis all having a big pillow fight in my living room. I just hope Nickel Back doesn't show up and ruin it all!
